What Do We Consider a Large Home or Office?

Unfortunately, there's no standard measurement that delineates a small, medium, or large home. Many people consider a 3,000+ square foot home large and anything above 5,000 square feet is extremely large - almost a mansion. Relators describe mansions to be homes with at least 8,000 square feet of floor space. However, some don’t classify a home to be a true mansion if it's less than 20,000 square feet.

Since it’s all subjective, we’ll define a large home or office as a building with as low as 3,000 and as high as 8,000 square feet of floor space.

Why do Large Homes and Offices Suffer from Poor Cell Signal?

Before we dive into the possible reasons behind why you’re experiencing poor cell signal inside your home or office, let’s briefly discuss how cell signal works.

Cellular signals are radio frequency waves broadcast by cellular towers and picked up by cellular devices. The farther they must travel to reach your cellular devices, the weaker the signal becomes, and if the waves encounter any cell signal interferences along the way, they can be reflected, weakened, or killed.

Now, let's take a look at why you might be experiencing poor quality cell signal inside your home or office.

1. How far away is your carrier's closest cell tower?

Is your home or office located in a rural area with the closest cell tower being 5 or more miles away? Do you live in a suburban area where towers are plentiful, but your carrier's cell tower is located far away?

Remember, the farther the signal travel the weaker it becomes. Poor cell service due to cell tower distance tends to affect large homes in remote/rural areas more than it would in the city or suburban areas.

2. Are there obstacles outside your home that can interfere with your cell signal?

As crazy as this sounds, trees, hills, valleys, lakes, and tall buildings block your cell signal.

If your house is surrounded by trees, you may have noticed that your cell signal is much stronger during the winter than it is during the summer. Trees, especially pine trees, can absorb and reflect cell signals, preventing them from reaching your device.

Living in a valley can be very beautiful, but if there’s a hill between you and your carrier's cell tower you probably have poor cell reception outside your home and spotty coverage (if any) inside your home. Similarly, if there are a lot of tall buildings located between your home and your carrier's cell tower, their building material can easily block the signal from reaching your mobile devices.

Lakes and creeks are commonly seen near large homes. Unfortunately, the moisture in the air constantly reflects and refracts the radio frequency waves, making them bounce around and change directions - weakening the signal in the process. If you live close to a lake, and your carrier's cell tower is located on the other side of the water, you’re likely to experience spotty coverage, even if the tower isn’t too far away.

3. What materials are in your building?

Does your home or office have a metal roof? Thick concrete walls? Multiple levels? Brick exterior with low-e glass on its windows?

Building material is notorious for blocking and extremely diminishing your cell phone signal. This is why people have to walk outside their homes to answer a phone call. Materials like metal, steel, concrete, brick, low-e glass, metal lath, ceramic tiles and more block cell signals.

In large buildings, the signal must travel through multiple walls, and possibly multiple floors, to provide you with consistent signal everywhere. However, because of all the external and internal material interferences, that’s not always possible, which leads to dead zones and poor coverage.

How to Improve Cell Signal in Large Homes or Offices?

Simple. Invest in a cell phone signal booster, also known as a repeater or extender.

Cell signal boosters, as their name suggests, are specifically designed to boost your cell signal.

Curious to know how signal boosters work? They use powerful external antennas (omni-directional or directional) to pick up and increase the power of whatever available signal you have outside your home no matter how strong or weak it is. Low-loss coaxial cable to relay the signal into your home, bypassing any building material that usually prevents the signal from entering. Signal amplifiers that greatly enhance talk, text, and data. Indoor antennas (panel or dome) to broadcast the boosted signal throughout your home or office and a power adapter to feed power to the booster system. For maximum signal boost, proper installation is very important.

All our cellular signal boosters:

  • Boost talk, text, and 4G, LTE, and 3G signals (with select boosters being 5G capable)
  • Are 5G compatible - Amplify voice and 4G LTE data signals on 5G phones and devices
  • Reduces the number of dropped calls
  • Eliminate connectivity issue
  • Work with all cellular devices – including iPhones, hotspots, tablets, iPads, Androids, mobile routers, etc.
  • Are compatible with all major carriers – AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular
  • Only need existing cellular signal to work, no need for WiFi
  • Are FCC-approved
  • Come with a two or three year warranty and 30-90 day money-back guarantee depending on the manufacture

How Do I Know Which Cell Phone Signal Booster Is Best for Me?

Consider three things:

  1. How large is your building and how much of it are you trying to cover? Are you trying to improve cell coverage in some areas or are you looking for whole-building coverage? Does your building have multiple floors or just one? For whole-building coverage inside a multi-level home or office, you'll want a booster that can support multiple inside antennas to maximize cell coverage.

  2. How strong is your outside signal? If you live in a weak signal area, you’ll want to get a booster that comes with a yagi antenna to reach far cell towers, and prioritize the power of the booster. You’ll need it.

  3. Do you want to boost signals for multiple carriers at the same time or just one? Single-carrier boosters provide higher power on the carrier they’re set to, but multi-carrier (or wideband) boosters are more versatile. If you live in a very weak signal area and only care about your carrier, a single-carrier booster will make the biggest splash.

Best Cell Phone Signal Boosters for Large Homes and Offices in Rural, Suburban, and Urban Areas

Cel-Fi GO X

Overview of the Cel-Fi GO X:

  • Up to 15,000 sq ft of coverage
  • Up to +100 dB gain
  • Boosts one carrier at a time
  • Compatible with AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular
  • Works with all cellular devices
  • Features the Cel-Fi Wave app for remote monitoring
  • Extremely customizable
  • Pricing starts at $999.99

The Cel-Fi GO X is a powerful single-carrier booster for large homes and any large building. It’ll work with all cellular devices and boost one carrier at a time – AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, or US Cellular.

Because it focuses all its power on boosting one carrier, it has incredible gain – up to +100 dB of amplification. It can dramatically improve talk, text, and data speeds in areas where only one bar of service is available. Plus, it supports multiple outdoor antenna configurations for more reach to and from your closest cell tower. For extremely rural locations, where maintaining a consistent signal seems impossible, we recommend you pair it with The Long Ranger due to its range capabilities (over 10 miles under perfect conditions).

It’s capable of providing you with a coverage area of up 15,000 sq ft. To maximize coverage inside your home or office, especially in multi-level buildings, it can support up to 4 indoor antenna configurations (dome or panel). Dome antennas are ceiling mounted and work best in open areas, while panel antennas are usually wall-mounted and work best in large rooms or hallways.

The Cel-Fi Wave app will help with the installation process and optimization. In addition, it allows you to monitor the GO X’s performance, as well as switch the carrier that is being boosted.

weBoost Installed Home Complete

Overview of the weBoost Installed Home Complete:

  • Up to 7,500 sq ft of coverage
  • Up to +72dB gain
  • Up to 24 dBm uplink and 12 dBm downlink
  • Works with all cellular devices across all US carriers
  • Boosts multiple cellular devices simultaneously
  • Includes a FREE professional installation
  • $1,199.99

The Installed Home Complete is weBoost’s most powerful home signal booster. It’s designed with most situations in mind – ideal for rural and urban living.

It features up to +72 dB of gain, with 24 dBm uplink and 12 dBm downlink, to communicate with far distanced cell towers and provide up to 7,500 sq ft of coverage. It’s strong enough to provide whole-home coverage in large homes that have strong cell signal outdoors. However, if you only get one bar of service outside your home or office, you won’t get 7,500 sq ft of coverage. A more realistic expectation would be between 4,000 and 6,000 sq ft – enough to cover an entire mid-size home or multiple rooms in your large home. To maximize your coverage, you might need additional antennas and a splitter for additional antenna ports.

The best part about this booster is that it includes a free professional installation (available for residential buildings only). You don’t have to worry about climbing onto your roof to install the antenna, finding the best location to install the equipment, or running cable – the professional installer will take care of it all.

For more coverage, consider the WilsonPro 70 Plus.

SureCall Fusion5s

Overview of the name of the SureCall Fusion5s:

  • Up to 10,000 sq ft of coverage
  • Max gain – 65 dB cellular, 72 dB PCS, 71 dB AWS, 63.5 dB LTE-A, and 64.3 dB LTE-V
  • Works with all cellular devices across all North American carriers
  • Boosts multiple cellular devices simultaneously
  • Features auto gain control
  • Offers multiple configurations
  • $850.00

The Fusion5s is a high-powered signal booster that excels in rural areas and large spaces. It’s compatible with all North American carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint), and will work with all cellular devices (mobile phones, tablets, hotspots, etc.).

This unit is extremely versatile and offers multiple configurations to maximize coverage in any situation. If you have a strong cellular connection outside your home, we recommend the omni-directional antenna kits. On the other hand, if you have spotty cell signal outside your home, then the yagi antenna kits will be your best option.

Ultimately, the internal antenna will be the deciding factor between the omni or yagi kits. Dome antennas broadcast an equal amount of signal in every direction. They are ceiling mounted and work best when placed in the center of a large open room. Panel antennas broadcast signal in one direction – the closer your mobile devices are to the antenna the stronger the signal. They are generally wall-mounted and great for covering one floor, large rooms, or hallways.

Under perfect conditions, meaning the booster was installed properly, you have a strong outside signal, and there are minimal indoor interferences, this unit can cover areas up to 10,000 sq ft with any configuration. It’s a strong performer in even the most rural of areas and provides consistent in-building coverage all for a reasonable price.

If you need to improve signal in a larger space, up to 20,000 square feet, check out the best-in-class, light commercial signal booster: the SureCall Fusion5X 2.0.

If your outside cell signal falls between 1 - 3 service bars, you’ll probably get between 7,000 to 11,000 sq ft - enough to still provide you with whole-home coverage.

The included high-gain yagi antenna and wall mount indoor panel antenna work perfectly together to optimize in-building cell service in all situations, especially in rural areas.

To make things even better, the HiBoost Signal Supervisor app helps with setting up the system, monitoring performance, and troubleshooting to make sure your cellular devices are always receiving the best signal possible.

WilsonPro 70 Plus

Overview of the name of the WilsonPro 70 Plus:

  • Up to 25,000 sq ft of coverage
  • Up to +70 dB gain
  • Works with all cellular devices across all US carriers
  • Boosts multiple cellular devices simultaneously
  • Automatic gain control to prevent overload
  • Professional grade booster
  • $1,199.99

The WilsonPro 70 Plus by Wilson Electronics is a professional-grade commercial cell phone signal booster designed for small businesses and enterprises. However, it can also be installed in large homes and offices that struggle to maintain a reliable connection inside and outside.

Due to its pro-grade technology, it can cover buildings up to 25,000 sq ft. Depending on how strong or weak your outside signal is, you’ll most likely get between 10,000 – 15,000 sq ft of coverage.

There are two different versions of this unit: 50 Ohm and 75 Ohm (represents the type of cable and connectors the system uses). In general, the 50 Ohm system performs slightly better due to less signal loss. However, the 75 Ohm system uses thinner cable, making cable runs much easier. Choosing between the two versions is essentially a decision between slightly better performance and ease of installation. We highly recommend choosing the 50 Ohm version if your cable runs will be longer than 50 feet.

Each Pro 70 Plus version features different bundles. If you have a really large office building or home in an area with decent outside signal, consider the omni outdoor antenna bundles. On the other hand, if your home or office is located in an area with poor cell service, the yagi outside antenna bundles will be your best option.

SureCall Fusion Professional

Overview of the name of the SureCall Fusion Professional:

  • Up to 8,000 sq ft of coverage
  • Up to +72 dB gain
  • 2XP technology for double the power
  • SureIQ technology to prevent signal overload
  • Works with all cellular devices across all North American carriers
  • Boosts multiple cellular devices simultaneously
  • $599.99

The SureCall Fusion Professional is a pro-grade signal booster for large residential homes and offices anywhere.

It uses 2XP technology to double the system's power to reach remote cell towers, making it a strong performer in rural areas. In addition, it features SureCall’s unique SureIQ technology to balance incoming signals and prevent the system from overloading, which can degrade performance or shut down the booster. This feature comes in handy in strong signal areas where your home’s building material greatly diminishes or completely blocks the signal from reaching your mobile devices.

It’ll improve talk, text, and data for all cellular devices in areas up to 8,000 sq ft under perfect conditions. Coverage area fluctuates based on your outside signal strength and internal building materials interfering with the cellular signals path. The kit can be customized and expanded to maximize your in-building coverage.

With this unit, you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck.
