Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What does a cell phone signal booster do?

It’s a device that boosts your current weak 3G and 4G signals and then delivers the stronger signal to your cell phone.

Q. How does it work?

  1. Outside Antenna: Pulls in the existing signal from the cell tower and sends to the amplifier.
  2. Amplifier: Boosts that signal multiple times and sends to the inside antenna.
  3. Inside Antenna: Broadcasts the boosted signal to the area in need.

Q. Will this work with my cell phone?

Yes. Cell phone signal boosters work with ALL mobile phones that use any variation of 3G or 4G service.

Q. Does this work with my service provider?

Yes. Our boosters work with all major North American carriers in the USA (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc.) and Canada (Rogers, Bell, Telus, etc.). We also carry carrier-specific products like AT&T signal boosters and Verizon signal boosters. For a more thorough list please email us at sales@signalboosters.com.

Q. What is my cell phone carrier’s frequency?

For a complete explanation of frequencies and a simple chart, see our Frequencies by Provider article.

Q. What type of signal boosters are there?

Cell phone signal boosters generally come in two categories: for buildings such as homes and offices and for vehicles such as cars, RVs, and boats.

Q. Is there a signal booster for my particular need?

Absolutely.

Signal boosters for homes and offices boost 3G & 4G LTE signals inside the building. Although you may get some coverage outside the building, they are not designed to for this purpose. They are generally fixed installations and powerful performers.

Signal boosters for cars, trucks, RVs, and boats boost 3G & 4G LTE signals inside your vehicle (usually a range of 5-8 feet). Some units can be used indoors with additional accessory kits.

Q. Do I need a data connection for the booster to work?

No, you don’t need an internet connection, but you do need an existing cell phone signal. If there is no existing signal, then you’re in a no service dead zone, meaning the amplifier cannot boost what isn’t there.

Q. What’s the difference between 3G and 4G?

3G handles talk, text, email, and basic internet use. 4G does all of 3G functions plus fast internet. Data-heavy apps and programs such as YouTube, Netflix, Pandora, Spotify, Facebook, Google Maps, Google Chrome, etc. require lots of bandwidth, so 4G speeds would be more suitable.

Q. What’s the difference between yagi and omni antennas?

Yagi and omni antennas are outside building antennas. Omni antennas are omni-directional. They pull signal from every direction. Good when you’re in a location with multiple same-carrier towers or you have multiple people with different carriers. Yagi antennas are directional. They pull signal in only one direction. Good for rural remote areas when you know the location of the tower and only to boost signal for just one carrier.

Q. What is ‘decibel gain’?

Cell phone signal strength is measured in dB (decibels). Typically, -50 dB represents great signal (full bars) and -110 dB is virtually no signal (dead zone). Cell phone signal boosters improve your coverage by amplifying signals and improving the dB gain of your cell phone. All our cell phone signal boosters have a listed dB value for better comparison.
